Thursday I buzzed the rumor that Gringo's Mexican Kitchen, a popular eatery in Texas City, was planning a site in League City. But officials in Gringo's La Porte corporate offices said there aren't any such plans in the works. "Unfortunately, there is not any immediate truth to that," spokeswoman Heather McKeon said. "We are always scoping out new locations, but have no immediate plans for League City." Are you disappointed?

Dang it Laura, how did that happen. What with the biker is dead, oh no hes not, dont yall have fact checkers in the building? Rumors are not really a good source of info as you found out several times. you must run yourself ragged trying to cover the whole county. Maybe you need an assistant? or 2 separate columns, one just for the island, there seems to be a bunch of new businesses here that you havent mentioned. Did you know the scooter folks on 23rd are selling out their inventory already? That was a pretty bad location for a rental place but any business that closes these days is bad news.
I noticed that the shop on Post Office with antique and collectibles dealers is open and didnt see it mentioned yet. The Connection?
I want to tout one of my favorite shops here. It is the Antique Warehouse at 423 25th. The shop was devastated but with tedious and unbelievable work is open. It is filled with so much local history and funk and truly wonderful antiques that you could spend days and never see it all. I purchased a cast iron fire screen from Scott just before the storm and left it for pick up later. The other day when I stopped to say hey, he handed it to me. Never expected to see it again as I was sure the waters had ruined it. Only in Galveston would you be able to go back 15 months and a hurricane later and the owner know where your purchase was and hand it to you like you bought it yesterday. Check it out.

Rosemary, The Biz Buzz column is a little different than other features in The Daily News. The column began as a place to either confirm or debunk rumors. It's evolved over the years, but I still love reporting a good rumor, as long as it's not mean-spirited, damaging or completely outlandish.
I don't think an assistant is in the cards for me. That's why I rely on readers and business owners to give me tips.
Thanks for the information on Antique Warehouse. That's what I like about the blog!

Rosemary,
You're being a bit harsh to Laura, don't ya' think?
I think she does a great job; even if it does include running herself ragged; trying to cover the whole county, and we thank her for that! She obviously has done a fine job without the need of an assistant.
We love hearing about the openings of all the businesses; rumor or true. And as you noticed she is the first to say, it is only a rumor, and quite often it is true. And it is always sad to hear the truth about the closings of businesses....wish they could only be rumors.
Will certainly check out your favorite shop...thanks for sharing.
P.S. We may need fact checkers, but what we really need here is SPELL CHECK!! And that is not a joke or a rumor! :)

Nah, Laura knows I am not being harsh on her. I was acknowledging how difficult it is to do her job. Is the Cajun Greek up and running yet? Ill check it out on the way out of town. Selfishly, I am consumed by Island news and am a grumpy old lady who wants more news about the end of the causeway without having to read about the mainland folks. Sorry. It is Bizz Buzz not Bizz Facto.
While appreciating our local journalists I add Leigh and Michael and some others and occasionally Heber and Dolph. My interests dont included sports or church news and everyone cant agree with each article all the time. Sometimes they are just put out there as info or to stimulate the readers thoughts and response or to educate, like the gardening and weather gurus. or is it gurii? Our daily doesnt stick to the newspaper credo of who, what, where and when just the facts reporting and leave it up to readers to get more info if they are interested. They have actually been a participant in local issues and taken stands on them. Mostly, I am grateful for that. But they do need occasional barbs like about the editing to keep them awake.

As a nosy old lady I love rumors. Maybe if and when I can finally get home I will volunteer for GDN. Their liability probably wont cover it tho. Not proof read , someone is getting paid to do that?

I wish someone would put a bug in the Kelley's peoples ear and tell them the Galveston Luby's location would be excellent for them!
We need a good "american style" breakfast place -- Denny's on seawall is disgusting, the last time I was in Dutch Kettle the waitress reeked of Marijuana, and IHOP...well...its IHOP.
Nothing will beat Luby's, but Kelley's would be a damn fine replacement.

BTW Laura, I heard that when Office Depot's lease comes up for renewal next year, they're closing the store. Any truth to that?
After the Hurricane Rita fire, they shrunk their floor space, and they reduced their floor space again after Ike....not sure whats next -- Office Depot the cubical version?
