H. Gill King, director of a University of North Texas laboratory for human identification and forensic anthropology, was among them. When he took the stand, prosecutors showed the jury photos of Riley Ann Sawyers’ skull.
Zeigler, just as his wife Kimberly Dawn Trenor did in her capital murder trial earlier this year, averted his eyes, unable to look at the three fractures and a photo showing Riley’s exposed skull.
Zeigler, whose seat at the defense table was closest to the projector, calmly looked down and covered his eyes with his right hand. It was the first bit of emotion I’d seen from him since his capital murder trial began Tuesday with the selection of a jury.
Some of the jury members’ faces, when viewing he photos, showed signs of stress.
The photos were difficult, upsetting in a way, to view during Trenor’s trial, and I didn’t relish the fact that I knew I’d see them again.
Unlike the beautiful photo of Riley, which was taken while she was still alive, showing her vibrant smile, these autopsy photos will be difficult again to erase from my mind.
