After pleasant weekend weather, Galveston County appears headed for yet another wet week. Currently it seems likely that the County will see not one, but two episodes of rain over the coming few days.
Normally a stretch of wet weather might not be too much of a problem this time of year, but Galveston is set to host the Lone Star Motorcycle Rally starting on Thursday, October 29. The huge rally, billed as the "World's Largest Halloween Party", is bound to attract a huge crowd, which of course could make any inclement weather a real headache for organizers, attendees and sponsors of the event.
So, what are forecasters saying about this week's weather?
First, the week is almost certain to start off with a round of thunderstorms sometime Monday or Monday night as a cool front plows into increasingly warm, humid air over southeast Texas. Heavy rain is possible and the National Weather Service has issued both a Hazardous Weather Outlook and a Flash Flood Watch for southeast Texas. While current projections have rain moving out of our area by Tuesday as the cool air moves in, the respite may be very short-lived.
Warm moist air is expected to return quickly by mid-week and another cool front is likely to reach the coast by Thursday. Rain is again anticipated with this front, and this is where it could get tricky. While some weather models are suggesting that the cool front will move through quickly, bringing better conditions for Friday and the weekend, the GFS model (Global Forecast System) hints that the front may slow down near the Texas coast. This would keep rain in the picture for Friday and even possibly Saturday.
At this point it is still a little too soon to tell if the rain will linger as the GFS suggests or move out more quickly, but it seems fairly certain that rain chances will be high at least for the start of the massive event.
Halloween is the occasion for trick or treat and I guess we will find out later this week exactly which it will be for us!
