TEXAS CITY — A Texas City man was partially decapitated in a wreck along the Interstate 45 feeder road near the Texas City Wye Saturday.
Elias Vargas, 26, was pronounced dead at the scene, the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office reported.
Sheriff’s investigators were called to the accident involving a single car about 7:45 a.m. But investigators said they believe the accident happened several hours before a passing motorists noticed the wreck.
Sheriff’s office spokesman Maj. Ray Tuttoilmondo said Vargas was driving north on the feeder road just north of Ocean Cabaret when his car slid from the road. Vargas, who was not wearing his seat belt, was thrown part of the way through the passenger side window of the car as the vehicle slammed into a guardrail.
Tuttoilmondo said Vargas’ head struck the guardrail several times. Investigators said Vargas was last seen when he left a party in Texas City between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m.
Authorities plan to test for alcohol. There was no evidence that anyone else had been in the car with Vargas or that another vehicle was involved, Tuttoilmondo said.
Tuttoilmondo said the accident scene was probably overlooked because the area is somewhat obscured from the freeway, especially at night.
