TEXAS CITY — “Mr. Bojangles” danced for Jerry Jeff Walker in a New Orleans jail cell in 1965.
This weekend, the audience can dance to the tune inspired by that encounter at the third annual Texas City Music Fest by the Bay. The festival pays tribute to Texas City native and 1999 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Charles Brown.
Walker will headline the festival at Nessler Park in front of the Doyle Convention Center.
The man who dubbed himself the “Gypsy Songman” in his autobiography will take the stage at 9 p.m. Saturday. Sharing the bill are “Mr. Rose Colored Glasses” himself — John Conlee, as well as Texas Johnny Brown, Step Rideau & The Zydeco Outlaws and Texas Blues Brothers Tribute Band.
Activities for kids include a “Kids Zone” with several moon walks, rock wall, face painting and pony rides.
The festival benefits the Texas City Cultural Arts Foundation, a nonprofit organization that promotes cultural arts in Texas City.
No food, beverage or glass containers are allowed inside the gates, but vendors will be on hand.
