GALVESTON — Betty Massey, chairwoman of the city’s recovery committee and member of the park board, announced her bid for mayor Wednesday.
Massey’s candidacy had been long rumored, but she would not confirm her intentions until now.
Although both Joe Jaworski and Danny Weber, who already announced candidacies, would be good leaders at any other time in the city’s history, Massey said she believed she alone had the skills necessary to lead the city through the rest of its recovery from Hurricane Ike.
“My experience chairing the 300-member recovery committee has reinforced how important it is to offer everyone a seat at the table, how essential it is to listen to all sides on an issue, and how critical it is to seek out voices that sometimes remain silent or unheard before making important decisions,” Massey said in a prepared statement.
“It is imperative that Galveston’s leadership be able to articulate our community’s vision and unite our neighbors in order to move forward together to rebuild the remarkable city we call home.”
Galveston has the opportunity to capitalize on the recovery initiatives to catapult the city into future prosperity, with the right leadership, Massey said.
Massey also picked up her first endorsement Wednesday. Restaurateur and early mayoral hopeful Johnny Smecca announced he would bow out of the race and support Massey.
The race to succeed Mayor Lyda Ann Thomas, who has reached her term limit, now includes four candidates: Jaworski, Weber, Massey and Mony Shlomo Hamo.
By state law, candidates cannot officially put their name on the ballot until January. The election is in May.
