SANTA FE — A computer systems switchover has cost the city its list of residents who will need help evacuating in the face of a hurricane.
The city’s police chief, Barry Cook, is asking for help in rebuilding that list, which city officials last used during the Hurricane Rita evacuation in September 2005.
They helped nearly 40 special-needs residents clear out as the area evacuated in the face of the hurricane.
Officials knew where to go for them because of state and local registration systems that produced the list of disabled residents and people with no means of transportation.
“Right now, we only have six names and they’re from the 211 database,” Cook said.
The 211 system is a state services hotline with which residents who need help evacuating can register. The state disseminates information on registered residents to local authorities, to coordinate evacuation for those who cannot evacuate themselves.
Forecasters anticipate as many as 17 named storms this year and up to 10 hurricanes, according to the National Weather Service. Half of those hurricanes could be Category 3 or higher, carrying winds of at least 111 mph.
