Good Stores And Good Sense Are Always Best
In regard to the story “Grocers battling for cost-conscious customers” (The Daily News, Oct. 28): I’m within 2 miles of a store where I do all of my grocery shopping.
I’ve concluded that, even though there are other stores in the area, this one is close, easy to get to and a pleasant place to shop.
I see no reason to waste gas running from store to store for so-called bargains.
What saves me money is diligent menu planning, shopping close to home to save gas and eating out only once a week.
I only wish I’d realized this at 18 instead of waiting until my 60s.

A Policeman’s Life Spared By God’s Grace
On the eve of Oct. 24, I was at the stop signal at Century and Highway 3, ready to cross to Wetzel when a bus or truck came by in front of me.
Seeing bumper-to-bumper traffic coming in both directions, I pulled up, ready to cross as soon as the truck passed, and then there he was — a policeman on a motorcycle, directly behind the bus that had just passed by me.
Had God not intervened and made me stop again, I would have run right into him. How tragic an accident would that have been.
I would like to tell everyone how dangerous that intersection is.
I feel so truly blessed the policeman was spared his life that day and I was spared the guilt I would have been faced with for the rest of my life.
May God continue to be with him each and every day as he faces the many dangers of his job.
I intend to contact the Department of Public Safety about this terrible, dangerous intersection, and I hope the policeman will do so as well. Maybe in both doing so, we can prevent another near-tragic accident.

Obama Girls’ Flu Shots Were Given Unfairly
President Obama’s daughters did get favoritism in the swine flu vaccination program. They’re not at high risk.
Obama and his wife are to be vaccinated, too, and they aren’t at high risk. I was under the impression that the vaccines went to high-risk people first.
Michelle Obama said her children were vaccinated only when the other school children were and that there was no shortage in Washington, D.C.
Since when is Washington a huge city? Houston is ranked third, but we have a shortage all over the area.
I am not getting the vaccine and neither is my child. That is my decision, as we are not at high risk.
I would like to see those who need the vaccine most get it, and others can wait their turn along with Washington and everyone else who doesn’t need it right now.
That seems to be the problem with the shortage.

After A Year, It’s Time To Clean Up Galveston
Galveston’s homeowners should clean up their property. It’s been a year since Hurricane Ike, and most damaged properties sit abandoned with nothing being done.
I worked my tail off and spent long hours to get my mom’s house repaired so she could move back in.
Some homeowners received Federal Emergency Management Agency money — some as much as $28,000 for their property — but, instead of cleaning their property, they ran with the cash and left the rats and looters to us.
I would like to know what’s to become of these properties. They’re a nuisance, environmentally unsafe in all aspects.
We all have a responsibility for what we own. There are all sorts of grants and government assistance to help rebuild or at least clean up. It’s time to come together and get Galveston cleaned up.

Writer Wrong To Call For La Marque March
In response to David Dampman’s letter “March on city hall to back police officers” (The Daily News, Oct. 29): He needs to be more informed that the grand jury that cleared the officers was hand-picked by the district attorney's office and acted as a puppet or rubber stamp for the bidding of that office.
Also, the Galveston County Medical Examiner overextended his interpretation of the facts to justify the officers’ action and the circumstances surrounding the event.
While he did rule the death a homicide, it remains under scrutiny.
The officers don’t need to march to city hall proclaiming their innocence but rather work within the community to express remorse and a more open line of communication in working with our city’s diverse population.
