CLEAR LAKE CITY — Friendswood kept its state tournament hopes alive with a 10-1 quarterfinal win over Magnolia West at the Region III-4A Team Tennis Championships on Friday in Katy.
But the season abruptly ended for Clear Creek, as the Wildcats dropped a 10-0 quarterfinal decision to No. 3-seeded and No. 17 state-ranked Seven Lakes at the Region III-5A Championships, played at Clear Lake High School.
The No. 23 state-ranked Mustangs, seeded No. 2, drew a first-round bye before beating Magnolia West, earning them a 9 a.m. semifinals berth today at Seven Lakes High School against Lamar Consolidated, a 10-8 upset winner over No. 3-seeded and No. 20 state-ranked San Marcos.
Should Friendswood win, it would advance to today’s 1:30 p.m. championship match at Taylor High School.
As for Clear Creek, runner-up of District 24-5A, it started the day with a 10-3 first-round win over La Porte, the District 22-5A champion.
The No. 2 boys’ doubles team of Casey Armstrong and Brendan Fang picked up a key win, helping give the Wildcats a 4-3 advantage going into the singles. Armstrong and Fang defeated Nathan Brock and Bryce Tracy 6-3, 7-6.
Then the Clear Creek girls, who already had swept the three doubles matchups, put the match away with another clean sweep in the singles.
Sammy Siegel, the No. 1 girls’ singles player, led the charge with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Danielle Ceron.
Bianca Quintanilla, Rebekah Taylor, Haley Albro and Amber Darr all followed with straight-set wins before Peyton Hardman iced the victory with win No. 10, a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Brigette Teague in the No. 5 singles.
