FRIENDSWOOD — Brandon Swindler did as expected.
Then two freshmen finished right behind the senior to propel Friendswood to its 16th straight cross country District 24-4A title.
Swindler took home the gold, his second consecutive, with a 16:26 mark. Freshmen Ryan Teel and Levi Tessler provided plenty of support. Tell finished second (16:42), while Kessler placed fourth (16:57).
“I’ve had young runners before, I just don’t think I’ve had two at the same time do so well,” Friendswood boys cross country coach Steve Haffelder said.
James Gregory finished eighth for Friendswood at 17:20 to help the Mustangs hold off Angleton by a slim 11 points.
No other Galveston County team figured into the point standings as they did not field full five-member squads.
Friendswood will advance to the Region III Class 4A Meet in Humble on Saturday. A berth to the state meet will be on the line, an achievement the Mustangs have attained for eight straight years.
Swindler placed third at the region meet last season, staking Friendswood to a third-place finish. Swindler has been to state all four years of his career.
“I like the way we’re running,” Haffelder said. “I just think we need to get our back runners to place a little higher.”
Friendswood Girls Take Second
The Lady Mustangs missed out on their third straight district championship.
But there were good reasons why.
Friendswood was without No. 1 runner Maddie Murphy, and its No. 2 runner slipped in the final 200 meters to finish out of the top 10.
Still, the Lady Mustangs finished second to earn a berth to the Region III meet.
“Considering everything that happened, I thought we ran real well,” Lady Mustangs coach Celeste Romell said. “We’ll get those kinks worked out.”
Murphy is expected to return for regionals.
Kendal McKitrick paced the Lady Mustangs with a third-place showing (13:59). Beth Armstrong finished sixth, while Makenzie Frieden and Megan Krail finished 10th and 11th respectively.
No other Galveston County school fielded a complete squad. Santa Fe’s Nikki Hansen finished 23rd overall.
