LEAGUE CITY — Codie Henriques stepped into the state spotlight.
Henriques was named Built Ford Tough Texas High School Football Player of the Week for private schools on Thursday.
The Bay Area Christian senior rushed for 271 yards on a massive 46 carries in Bay Area’s thrilling 26-20 overtime victory over Katy Pope John XXIII. Henriques scored the game-winning touchdown and accounted for all the yards in the extra frame.
Just as important, Henriques did not take a play off the entire game. He starts at cornerback, and since fullback Andy Freeburg suffered an injury, Henriques had to take over the workload at running back.
“Codie was really impressive, he just put everything on his shoulders,” Bay Area coach Darwin Pennye said. “This couldn’t happen to a more deserving kid, who outworks just about everyone.”
