Interesting test for a new ballot system

By the way, voters who are registered to vote in Galveston County can cast ballots at any polling place within the county today.
In other words, if you’re registered to vote here, you don’t have to go to a poll in a specific precinct.
This is a pilot program — and it’s something of a test of the e-Slate system.
Regardless of where you live, you can stop at any polling place, and the e-Slate machine should pull up the correct ballot for you. If you live in Santa Fe but work in Texas City, you should be able to vote on your lunch break, near your workplace, and still be able to vote in the bond election.
There’s one exception: The system is not in place in Friendswood for the election on lifting restrictions on alcohol sales. The city is conducting that election, rather than the county’s elections department.
There’s a lot to like about this new system. It offers possibilities in terms of efficiency — meaning less cost to taxpayers — and convenience.
There is a debate about whether to use this system in elections with higher turnouts. We’d love to hear from readers on that point. We expect a lively debate in Word on the Street. If you’d like to join in, tell us about your experiences voting by writing to letters(at)galvnews.com.
