Let us eat cake: Friends and family have long encouraged Santa Fe resident Kari Powers to put her baking skills to work.
So Powers and husband Robert asked: “Why not?” Look for the Powers to open Cakes N More of Santa Fe, 12625 state Highway 6.
Cakes N More will launch as a dessert-style bakery, possibly adding breads later, Kari Powers said.
As its name implies, the bakery will offer all kinds of cakes, including German chocolate, Italian cream and pumpkin, to name a few.
Cakes N More also will make cupcakes, cheese cakes, pies, cookies, muffins and dessert breads, such as banana nut and pumpkin.
Several different flavors of fudge, brownies, dipped fruit and personalized candies for weddings, baby showers and other special events, also will be on the menu when the bakery opens at the end of the month.
The bakery will take orders for holidays and parties.

On the menu: Houston-based Cafe Adobe is cooking up a restaurant at the site formerly occupied by Bennigan’s Grill & Tavern, 1330 W. Bay Area Blvd., reported CDC Houston, which executed a ground lease.
Cafe Adobe has four Houston-area restaurants and more across Texas.
The chain serves up Tex-Mex food and is best known for margaritas.
Look for a mid-November opening of Cafe Adobe near Baybrook Mall.
The dirt: Is La Marque soon to be home to a new commercial development? Gajjan Singh purchased 7.69 acres on FM 1764, west of Walmart and next to La Marque Mini Storage.
Steve Kuchta, with the island’s Joe Tramonte Realty, represented Singh. Craig Domin of Pearland-based Realtek Real Estate Services represented sellers Ron Crowder and Butch Remschel.
Neither side disclosed a purchase price. No word on what plans Singh has for the parcel. Stay tuned.
Needle news: Custom-embroidery shop Just Add Thread has decided to stay put in League City, reported owner Randy Winsman.
Just Add Thread’s 6628 Stewart Road store has been closed since Hurricane Ike struck a year ago.
Winsman is running the business from his home.

Grill thrill: After making a post-Ike return this summer to serve dinner, the island’s Saltwater Grill, 2017 Postoffice St., now is serving lunch, reports Danny Hart, a principal in Galveston Restaurant Group, which owns the upscale casual eatery.
