Springs clinches share of 24-5A title

LEAGUE CITY — In just their second year playing varsity football, the Clear Springs Chargers are already district champions.
Springs (7-2 overall, 5-1 district) clinched at least a share of the District 24-5A title with a 25-13 win over Clear Brook on Friday.
Quarterback Phillip Miller had two touchdowns on the night, a 38-yard pass to Sam Richardson and a 12-yard run in the fourth quarter. Trevon Randle also added a 77-yard kickoff return for a score for Springs.
The Springs defense had a strong night, holding the Wolverines to just 213 yards, including 146 on the ground.

Friendswood 38, Brazosport 14
The Mustangs clinched a spot in the Class 4A playoffs with the big road victory.
Andrew Cole had 161 total yards and two touchdowns, while Jonathan Johnson had 36 yards rushing and a score. Johnson also threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to quarterback Peter Maetzold late in the first half.
Maetzold finished the game with 232 yards passing and a score to Chris O’Bryan.
Friendswood (6-3, 4-2) held Brazosport to 117 total yards and just eight first downs. The Mustangs also forced three turnovers.

Alvin 33, Clear Creek 16
The Wildcats’ playoff hopes took a big hit with a stunning loss to Alvin. Creek (4-5, 3-3) no longer controls its own destiny.
Creek was held to three points until 6:42 in the fourth quarter. Jarryd Garza and Marcus Mata hooked up for a pair of late touchdowns to make the final outcome closer.

Angleton 35, Santa Fe 14
The Indians’ losing streak hit three as Angleton pummeled Santa Fe (6-3, 3-3).
Santa Fe managed just 169 yards — all on the ground. The Indians did not complete one pass.
Jacob Morse had 111 yards and a touchdown on eight carries for Santa Fe. Garet Davidson added a touchdown on a 3-yard run.

Manvel 20, La Marque 12
For the second straight year, the Cougars lost to Manvel in a game that was vital to their playoff hopes.
Emanuell Williams hooked up with Michael Gilmore for a pair of scores, including a long touchdown in the fourth quarter. But La Marque (4-5, 2-4) had five turnovers and two blocked kicks, leading to the loss.
Dawson 34, Texas City 14
The Stings couldn’t get their offense going, gaining just 134 total yards on the night.
Justin Branch tied the game at 7 in the second quarter on a 2-yard run. But it was all downhill from there for Texas City (3-6, 2-4).

Bay Area Christian 26, Katy Pope John XXIII 20
Cody Henriques scored the game-winning touchdown in overtime and the defense didn’t allow a score as the Broncos (4-5, 3-1) squeaked by Pope John.

O’Connell 36, Beaumont Legacy 19
The Bucs overcame a 13-9 halftime deficit to win the district home game.
James Jones rushed for three touchdowns, from 5, 2 and 30 yards. Drew Rios added 124 yards on the ground, including and a 15-yard touchdown
O’Connell (4-4, 2-1) also got a defensive touchdown from Corey Lee and a pair of safeties, once of which came on a tackle by Luke DiMarco.
