GALVESTON — More than 500 seaport and maritime transportation leaders, industry experts and service providers from across the nation will descend on the island Oct. 25 for the American Association of Port Authorities yearly convention.
The five-day convention is predicted to pump $2 million into the island’s economy through hotel stays and other spending by conventioneers, Port of Galveston Director Steve Cernak said.
That the port is host of the event a year after Hurricane Ike knocked the public docks askew is a feat. In one of its first meetings after the Sept. 13, 2008, storm, the Wharves Board of Trustees, which governs the port, discussed whether it was realistic to forge ahead.
The convention will be at the Galveston Island Convention Center, 5600 Seawall Blvd.
“We felt that bringing the convention to Galveston would allow us to bring some economic benefit to the community and also give the community opportunity to shine and show its resiliency in recovering from what we all went through a year ago,” Cernak said.
The convention was in Galveston in 1919, 1935 and 1987.
