Silver Lining For The Poolside Aquarians
All hail the Mystic Krewe of Aquarius! In 2010, the krewe will celebrate 25 years of Mardi Gras with “Silver Anniversary Memories” as the theme of its ball and pageant and famous seawall parade.
Lots to come on that but, first, the krewe’s summer luau found mems and guests gathered waterside at the Knights of Columbus pool.
Greeting guests with the traditional Hawaiian lei were Hope Cooke, Betty Dyda and Rhonda Sykes.
There was a huge buffet and plenty of margaritas — and seen enjoying both were 2009 King Aldan Kahla and his wife, Queen Terri Kahla, along with Harry and Marian Millo, Billie Raitano, John Gonzales, John and Mari Berend, Merle and Pat Lidstone, Marie Cruse, new 2010 Baron Pat Muldowney and wife Baroness Nancy Muldowney, Jim and Christy Kinzer, and Rex and Christy Ballard.
Krewe rezzie DJs Mike McKinney and David Lewallan provided plenty of good music all evening. There was plenty o’ buzz about the Krewe’s upcoming 15th annual trolley party not to be derailed by the trolleys being idle since Hurricane Ike. Party chairs Rick and Joanie Heupers have hired Bob Walker’s pink tour train and, courtesy of Jay Carnes and Mike Millo, the dancing queen and fire truck for the party.
All geared up for the ride are Speedy and Janet Dobranich, Cheryl Overton, Tony and Charlsey Porcarello, Daniel and Michelle Loubiere, Ruth Canales and Terry and Ginger Robinson.
And, can ya’believe? Making plans for the krewe’s 25th birthday in 2010 are president and charter member Johnny Lidstone, longtime friend and member Fran Grabiel, 2010 queen-to-be Stephaine Blase and a host of other members, including Andy and Danette Kertsens and Jerome and JoAnn Anselmo.

Put Yourself In Queen’s Photo Album
The 1911 “Queen of the Gulf,” gracing the seawall for her 100th year, is inviting everyone to share their family photos of the historic hotel for a commemorative book and display.
The Hotel Galvez marketing and sales department, at 2024 Seawall, Galveston, would like duplicates of your photos, or digital copies, rather than originals, as its staff won’t be able to return whatever you send. Or you can post pix and stories on the hotel’s Facebook page.
The hotel, o’course, is owned by Galveston preservationists and philanthropists Cynthia and BOI George Mitchell and is part of Mitchell Historic Properties. More to come, next Scenes.
Next Scenes ...
The Capital Q BBQ and the Olympia Grill. Howzat for sounding scrummy!
