Capital Q Texan BBQ owners Nick Fontana and the darling Ray Herrera, already successful owners of two DeeCee eateries, are serving islanders and visitors alike at their most welcome seawall eatery.
BOI Nick, nephew of the late Judge Piperi and Lena Piperi, is re-establishing his Baby Apple roots and, along with the darling Ray and fellow partner Henry Gandy, is thrilled to be part of Galveston’s revitalization.
At the recent soft opening, exec chef Jose Salgado was found smoking up meaty treats for Galveston’s finest, Divacuz Bill Scott, Dana Williams, Matt Oliver, William Ashton and Patrick Mullens and visiting with Ingrid Gonzalez the Gonzalez six-pack.
Jim and Cindy Earthman, Patty McBride Harmon, daughter of Divafave’s Central Drug Store’s Dan and Benita McBride, the Hogan boys Roby and Mike with Roxy and Suzy and mom Jo-Ann were all spotted enjoying the historic ambience of the specially made GHF-acquired windows and The Star-shaped bar created from woods from historic Galveston homes like Bill and Sharon Strain’s 12th and Church place.
Cap Q plans an al fresco area for fun after a swim and also will feature some bootscootin’ music from folks like the popular Line-Up, whose mems are Willy and Sherrill Gonzalez and sons Jackson and Nicholas, Jeff and Shannon Pennington and daughters Elizabeth and Megan; bass player Stacy Cook and Michelle Pettit and their daughter Kendall.
Other foodies present were Tikie and Larry Kriticos from Olympia Grill. Read on about this legendary Galveston foodie family.
Larry’s Star Turn
Speaking of the Big O, Tikie and Larry Kriticos have created the most delightful setup ’cross the island on Harborside at the newly reopened Olympia Grill.
Warm breezes and Greek music combine with exotic belly dancing girls and dockside dining to let you know you’re in for a great evening.
Once inside, and in the good hands of lovely manager Wendy Hsu, the menu is the star. Enjoying the attention of server James Sale were Christine and Hud Hopkins, Jennie and Mike Janota and Don and Betty Prough.
Kriticos’ niece, chef Dimitra Kriticos, is a magician in the kitchen! Her pastitsio is a poem and salmon moussaka is magic. But The Diva’s fave is a dessert called Kataifi, a shredded phyllo dough with whipped cream over baklava.
These guys are tried and true, they’re first-generation Greek American Kriticos born and raised in Galveston whose father, aunt and uncle have all operated restaurants here, including the Seawall Café and Golden Greek of happy memories.
Look for the Greek evenings (rezzies for sure!) and make the Olympia one of your habits — it gives the Baby Apple that Big Apple feel.
