It’s out of this world — up north county, at NASA 1 and El Camino Real, the fragrance of garlic fills the air. It’s a favorite of NASA’s astronauts — be sure to look at the picture walls — both from here and outer space, and it’s called “Frenchy’s.”
Frankie Camera and his wonderful Italian family serve mouthwatering Italian dishes like osso buco, lasagna, gnocchi, and it’s brought to your white tableclothed table by the charming John Roten.
Frankie’s sister Anna Camera Ferraiulo and chef Maria Ferraiulo (parents of daughter the stunning Maria Rosaria Feraivolo), in from Rome, charmed the crowd with tales of the Isle of Capri, Florence and the Eternal City. Olga Camera Camera Mire and brother Giuseppa and Gianna Camera all helping to create the atmosphere that makes you feel you’re in sunny Italy itself.
Jan’s Walking Into Galveston’s History
Author Jan Johnson was a’signing and a’selling her first book, “Walking Historic Galveston: A Guide to its Neighborhoods” during last Saturday’s ArtWalk at Gayle and Rex Reynolds’ Water’s Edge Art Studio and Gallery, 13th Street and Avenue M.
She and Gene Bindhammer went to the Tremont House to view their vintage postcard collection.
Jan used quite a few of her own postcards in the book. She and Gene, a semiretired real-estate agent, GRI and a great cook, are nestled happily up in League City.
The Galveston Island gal also is teaching adult English as a second language through College of the Mainland and has taught, and hopes to teach again, a leisure continuing-ed class on Galveston’s history entitled “Discover Historic Galveston.”

Raise Your Steins For Oktoberfest Stomp
OoomPahPah, Island Oktoberfest, hosted by First Evangelical Lutheran Church and co-sponsored by Del Papa Distributing Company, starts Friday evening, Oct. 23 and will feature the popular band Haywire, one of Austin’s most popular country and western and contemporary groups.
Co-chairs Ron Hanson and Sharon Nugent, sausage booth chair Noel Spencer and PR guru Robyn Bushong say to expect smoked sausage, bratwurst and knackwurst and bevvies such as German-style beer and wines both days.
On Saturday, there’ll be the internationally acclaimed Alpenfest Band, along with great German food — including First Lutheran’s famous German dinners a’la Richard Howard and his committee.
There will be shopping opps for quality arts, crafts and gifts — with all booths located in the newly refurbished and restored Lyceum — as well as a variety of fun games and activities for both children and adults and a fabulous auction.
In addition to getting to see the original church post-restoration, festival goers should find the event a great opportunity to get a head start on their holiday shopping, as many vendors will feature Christmas-gift items.
JoAnn Smith and Tiffany Hanson say the kiddos will have a pony carousel, moon walk, rock climbing wall, petting zoo, water balloon toss and Suzanne Peterson’s face painting.
George Black and Trent Morgan promise raffles, games and competitions.
Island Oktoberfest admission is free. For information about the event, go online to www.firstlutheran galveston.com or call 409.762.8477.
