Happy birthday to University of Texas Medical Branch TopDoc and the biggest tar heel of ’em all, Don Powell, who c’brated with family — including the Diva herself, don’cha know — and a specially made cake with his favorite UNC Tar Heel logo.
His über chocolate cake from Chopin Mon Ami was created by pastry chef Armando Duque, late of Moody Gardens, UTMB catering and The Phoenix.
CMA props Judy Buxton Elmendorf and her son Todd Schott are dishing up the retro-shrimpburger from the Boulevard Drive-In.
Rumor has it that everyone’s favorite cop and baker, Oscar Ekelund, is consulting on some of the retro-items from the old beloved G and G bakery.
Let’s have a fruit pizza and some cake cuts! Stop by their 39th Street location and have a chew or two.

Sister Christine Out For A ‘Big’ Grand
Christine Hopkins has set a goal of raising $1,000 for Gulf Coast Big Brothers Big Sisters, and I’m not there yet.
She has until Sept. 30 to raise the loot, and it’s is a fabbo program in which the Diva is a big believer, so please help her reach her goal.
Remember even $10 or $15 adds up pretty quickly.
Christine’s been a Big Sister for about six years now and said it’s incredibly fulfilling.
Her present Little Sister, Jasmine, is entering fifth grade and doing great.
Her first Little Sister, Crista, now lives in San Marcos and is in the Job Corps Program, which she really likes, and she still stays in touch with Christine.
Junior League Puts ‘Old’ On The Spot
For an “oldie” like the Diva, the Junior League of Galveston County’s 2009 “Old Galveston Glamour” theme will be a blast from the past.
This 58th annual holiday charity ball will be held at the Hotel Galvez. Right now, sponsors are in the spotlight.
To help with their terrific works in a major way, why not be a sponsor. To do that, contact Reene Bradshaw at 832-250-6211 and to donate silent auction items contact Kimberley Walker at 281-236-9101, visit www.jlgalveston.org or call 409-765-7646. More next Scenes.
Aaannnddd Another Birthday Boy
BOI and recent returnee Scott Livanec celebrated his 40th birthday at the Pelican Club.
Wife Martha — who’s a seventh-generation native of Lake Charles, La., who met Scott at UTMB — was the party planner.
Guests gathered in the lounge for happy hour and received Mardi Gras-style beads with the number “40” as they entered.
Scott arrived later and was greeted with whoops of “Surprise!”
Guests were Kim and Fred Raschke, Kim and Steve Conner, Karen Flowers and Ted Shook, VJ Tramonte, Margaret and Vicente Resto, Sarah and Mike Piel, Machele and Greg Chaljub, Michelle and Bryan Ritchey of Houston and Martha and Scott Livanec.
Talk about timing; they married, moved to Atlanta for eight years, had two children there and chose to move back to the island in 2005, just three days before evacuating for Rita.
They and their two Georgian tots are thrilled to have their first BOI, Caroline Isabel Livanec, born at UTMB in January.
Aaanndd, another island tie, Sarah Piel and Martha were college roommates at Hollins University, Roanoke, Va.
Jan Takes Isle History Class To Texas City
