The full moon is having its positive influence on fishing, as nice catches are being reported from around the Galveston area. With the light winds, action from the surf is picking up and should continue until the next spell of moderate to strong winds hits.
Eileen Palmer fished the surf at Jamaica Beach and landed a 24-inch speck.
David and Marshall Spears fished the surf last weekend from Crystal Beach to the South Jetties.
Using yellow gulps and other baits, the two brothers caught a flounder and two bull reds.
While fishing the South Jetty, they observed several violations of the rules regarding bull reds. Exceeding the limits and no tags were the main infractions.
Sarah Melcer and her fishing dog Abby were back at the jetties Monday and found the fishing to be spectacular.
Using squid and mullet for bait, their catch included 20 large gafftop and five bull reds that were released. The action took place at the end of the South Jetty.
Capt. Paul Stanton, Aqua Safari Charters, along with first mate Ronnie Cline, hosted the Bill McElya family from Katy to a productive jetty fishing trip Monday.
Fishing the Gulf side of the South Jetty, they caught and tagged four bull reds and decked a 3-pound gafftop. The bait of choice was Spanish sardines.
Shirley Pike, Fat Boy’s Bait Camp, reported excellent catches of flounder and bull reds by her customers, using mud fish and live shrimp for bait.
Clev Shockley, Mary Fitch and Jimmy Snedecor accounted for two reds, two flounder, two specks, a large sheepshead and lots of sand trout. Shrimp and live mullet from Fat Boy’s were their choices of baits.
Capt. Michael LaRue has been having outstanding results lately fishing over deep shell.
Monday, he hosted the Tommy Schirra party of three to a full limit of trout and reds. Lemon Drop Goobers accounted for the trout, while Strike Pro Hunch Backs were the favorite of the reds. LaRue said the reds were caught in shallow water.
Moses Lake continues to produce some nice fish, according to a report from Vicki Pike at The Fish Spot Bait Camp.
Monday, customers Eric Rodriquez and Emory Fonterol caught 20 trout and two bull reds using artificial baits.
Kevin Blanchard on the other hand fished Moses with live shrimp and landed two trout, a flounder and 12 sand trout.
Bo Canalito, a longtime Galveston Bay angler, called in to report porpoises hitting the flounder pretty hard. He said the popular mammals eat 15 to 20 flounder per day and are growing in numbers.
