The Galveston Bay Complex is experiencing some of the best fishing of the year this week. Reports from all across the area indicate the big three, flounder, reds and trout, are biting.
Wednesday afternoon, I visited with Raymond Berry at GYB Bait Camp at the yacht basin and learned flounder action has picked up considerably this week. Berry said the flounder are getting larger, and the action has been consistent.
Also mentioned were the jetties where his customers have made several nice catches. Speckled trout were reportedly being caught along the rocks, which is unusual for this time of year.
Karen Wolden, Galveston Bait and Tackle, reported nice catches of flounder coming from West Bay and the causeway area. Lots of croaker are being caught around the big bridge.
Brenda Rilat, Lee’s Bait & Tackle near the Texas City Dike, reported a nice catch from Dickinson Bayou by customers Brenda and Jerry Rohacek. Four slot reds, two 17-inch flounder and three specks were their catch while using live shrimp for bait.
Vicki Pike, The Fish Spot on Moses Lake, reported some good catches also. Freddy Ramos and his son, Freddy Jr., used live mullet to bring in a full limit of flounder and two slot reds.
Also fishing Moses Lake were Colby and Wesley Richards who landed 40 sand trout and a flounder, and Bonnie and William Panters who caught three flounder using soft plastics for bait.
Capt. James Plaag, Silver King Adventures, placed his guests into full limits of trout while fishing Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. Additionally, Sunday’s group landed five flounder and three reds, while Tuesday’s customer added a flounder to the stringer.
The fish were caught while wading the drain areas of marshes in waist-deep water using Bass Assassins Sea Shads and Top Dog Juniors in bone.
Capt. Chris Jamail, Hookset Charters, hosted Chris McMullen and his wife, Lynn, and her brother-in-law, Mike Kennedy, to some great action fishing over shell in Galveston Bay. Their catch included 27 trout and three reds.
Jerry and Bo Pitts wade-fished marsh streams and caught limits of trout by 9 a.m. The catches occurred in waist-deep water using Bass Assassin Sea Shad and She Dog Mirrorlures.
Opa Miller fished the north shoreline around Virginia Point using fingerling mullet for bait and landed five flounder between 18 and 22 inches, retaining two. The fish were caught in about 18 inches of water.
Dwight Dotson and his wife, Shunda, fished the Clear Lake Shores area and overall found the action slow; however, Shunda’s catch saved the day. It was her largest fish ever — a 40-inch black drum.
I have more good fishing news in that we had more reports than usual Wednesday. I will continue them in the next edition of the Reel Report, along with others received by press time today.
